At many previous meetings , Mike Schmidt gave a fly-tying demonstration. Here are some of the highlights...
The instructions to tie these flys are provided to you as a courtesy of Mike and a benefit of COFF membership. Just click on the fly name and complete instructions should appear. Fly of the Month from Federation of Fly Fishers
Looking for a good smallmouth fly? Here's a pattern all the way from Virginia (through Tom Allen and Todd Jamison) called the Murray's Madtom. This is a favorite fall pattern for large smallmouth in the Shenandoah. It also works for slow moving largemouth in early spring after ice-out. It is not an everyday fly, but for predatory browns and smallmouth this is a great fly. The Madtom is a small black catfish that grows no larger than 3 inches. They hide under rocks and are only out at night and early morning. Whenever one is scared from under its rock several smallies would be all over it. Not a good life, but there is one under every rock in the Shenandoah. Photo and fly recipe here...
