FLY PATTERN: Blue Quill |
Materials: |
Tail: Dark Microfibbets |
Body back: Grey Quill |
Body Front: Grey dubbing |
Wing post: Hi-Vis |
Hackle: Grey/Silver or Grizzly |
Hook: Orvis 4641 size 18 1X fine |
Thread: Uni-thread grey 8/0 |
Step 1: |
Begin this
pattern with your thread at the back of the hook. With the thread firmly attached tie in
three or four microfibbets. The
microfibbets should be just longer than the length of the hook shank. Start up the hook shank and attach wrapping
back. Once at the back add a wrap
under the microfibbets to give the tail a permanent slight upturn. |

Step 2: |
Tie in the
grey colored quill by the small tip and secure with a few wraps of
thread. Take the thread forward until
there is only about a third of the hook shank left. Once the thread is in place then wrap the
quill forward and tie it off. |

Step 3: |
This is a
post pattern, so at this point it is time to tie in the post. I
usually tie th Hi-Vis in by the center of the material and then bring
the pieces together and tie to be upright.
NOTE: The thread is the
heaviest material used on this fly, so less is better on the post. By using too much you will make the fly
front heavy. |

Step 4: |
Tie in the
hackle a few wraps back of the post.
With th hackle secure, make a few dubbed wraps behind the post and to
the eye of the hook. Wrap the hackle
three time behind the post and two times in front of the post. NOTE:
Another common dry fly error is overhackling; it does not take much
for the proper sillhouette... |

Step 5: |
To finish
this fly whip finish at the eye after wrapping off the hackle. Trim any errant hackle fibers, and then
trim the post at a slight down angle from the front and just above the
hackle. |
